Year 1 have started propagating seeds in their classroom for planting later. They have planted broad beans, sunflowers, parsley and poppies.

We've had some lovely weather this week and it is amazing how much new growth has appeared in and around the garden area. The new strawberry plants have survived the freezing winter and all the fruit bushes and trees are beginning to bud.

Tree Planting

The morning dawned wet and drizzily... not a good start!

My husband, Neal and Todd the dog accompanied me to school, unfortunately the promised volunteers from BTCV wouldn't be able to help as they were busy somewhere else but at least Neal was a gardener by trade.

The turnout was pretty poor, even by our standards! We had only 6 adults and 3 children who braved the weather to help but despite this we got our photos in the local paper and manged to get all the trees and bushes planted in under 2 hours!

We planted 1 plum tree, 1 cherry tree, 4 gooseberry bushes, 8 raspberry canes, 4 blueberry bushes, 5 dogwoods, 5 field maples, 5 hornbeams, 5 hazels and 5 crab apples....phew!!

Winter vegetables

Today I checked on the vegetables we planted before the bad weather, some of them seem to have stood up extremely well to the freezing temperatures. Some not so good. We also have problems with the neighbouring cats using the raised beds as toilets! A clever application of netting stapled to the top seems to have helped :o)

Today our trees arrived from 'The Big Tree Plant' along with the fruit garden we ordered with our Morrison's Lets Grow vouchers.
I have organised a community tree planting day for next Saturday (19th Feb) ... lets hope the sun shines for us!
