Courgettes and pumpkins!

Following a rather awkward summer of weather, we returned in September to find the eight-ball courgettes had gone crazy! We have been using them to make ratatouille during environmental club and had them in our school dinners. We have also managed to harvest some runner beans which have also been used in the school dinners. Our pumpkins grew very well and we used 6 of them as part of a harvest raffle to raise money for Oxfam....

During environmental club this week, we split into 3 groups. One group was doing the final round of cooking leek and potato soup, one group was planting seeds, filling up pots with compost and general tidying up and our group went pond dipping. We left the small pond well alone as this was where the frogs had laid all their frogspawn and cast our nets instead into the big pond.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm...

We were very excited when we checked out the pond during environmental club to find lots and lots of frogspawn in the pond – we even saw a number of frogs ducking under the water as we approached. We are hopeful for lots of new frogs this year!

Get growing Day 10th March 2012

We had a very exciting Get Growing Day on Saturday 10th March 2012 where teachers, parents and children carried out a wide variety of jobs around the school grounds. Compost was added to the remaining pots and beds ready for planting, seed trays were filled and seeds sown and these are now germinating in the mini greenhouses. We have decided to turn two of the raised beds on the terrace into herb beds, so bulbs and plants wer...

Today we worked in three groups. The first group was in the ICT suite making labels for the plants because the crows keep picking them out and we now need labels we can tie onto the growing frames. The second group was outside continuing to finish tidying up the polytunnels and to make sure all the were full of compost. The next job for them was to sort out the mini greenhouses.

Our group went out into the grounds to take some exciting photos of the new bulbs, plants and naugh...

Well it's been a long time since I last updated the site but now that the spring is approaching new optimism about the garden arrives.
Over the winter we have kept the garden ticking over and the mild weather has meant that Garlic and Onion bulbs have done really well.
One new focus for the new year is the idea of a Community Orchard. We have been talking to various growers and specialists regards planting.

We took part in the RSPBs Birdwatch this week by watching the visitors to the vegetable garden. The children are now pretty good at identifying blackbirds and the odd crow. I had expected a more diverse selection of birds, we certainly get a gratifying number during the day, but perhaps having 40 young and excitable bird watchers all standing there counting, identifying and asking questions put off those avians of a more nervous disposition!

Due to the lack of frost so far this Autumn, our vegetables have been growing well.

We have already started to harvest what we have sown. So far we have had beetroot, beans, courgettes – green and yellow, strawberries, broad beans, onions, garlic and four types of lettuce. Although fresh produce leaves the polytunnel to head for the kitchen, it often doesn’t get there as we have discovered that peas and beans taste great raw, lettuce is sweet when freshly picked and there are never enough strawberries to make a full portion!

During the half-term break I was able to construct and fit the door frames and doors. Again, my brother offered his assistance. Good job, because I'm not to sure on making concrete mixes.

The tadpoles have metamorphosed and are now tiny little frogs, the size of your finger nail.

Looks like we can pick our first crop of peas, and some new potatoes too, so all looking quite good at the moment.

We have put lots of butterfly houses around the school grounds and we have ordered some caterpillars and started to look after them, as well as making a garden for them to live in and to attract more butterflies to live in our school grounds.

The topic for our January JACs meeting was making a bee hotel.

Our expert beekeeper, Tim Harris, started the meeting by asking, what do bees do for us? You could see by the expressions on their faces – their eyes getting bigger and slightly leaning back in their chairs – they were having a think, when Olivia says, “they help our gardens grow!” That’s right, they aren’t just scary things flying around...

As you all probably know, it's quite a stressfull time when the Ofsted inspectors descend. However, after a two day visit, the initial feedback is very encouraging for us at Manor High. The only disappointment I have is that they were not able to observe the Horticulture class! Oh well.

Yesterday, the reception children learnt how to make bird food cake and how to look after the birds in the wintertime, especially when the weather was cold. They also strung some monkey nuts on to string and filled some bird feeders. This morning they hung them up for the birds, and hopefully, it won't be too long before the birds are feeding from them, perhaps squirrels too!

We have been planting trees and bulbs in the grounds as well as developing natural meadow areas full of wildflowers. We have even started breeding our own Painted Lady butterflies over the last 2...

Winter Wildlife

With the winter arriving the children have been learning about habitats and how to create areas to encourage helpful insects and other animals into the garden area. Together they have made bee-boxes, blue tit nest boxes, and are now in the process of making bat boxes. This gives them both practical skills and teaches them about wildlife in the local area that will hopefully benefit from this project.

We are having a 'big dig' on October 9th where mums and dads are invited to help us re-do some very scruffy plastic veg beds with some nice wood. We are also going to convert our wooden play train into a chicken house and put a fence all round it. East Feast are going to come into school to help us get our growing project going.
